Hands-On Science
Students will build and race balloon rockets along string tracks, experimenting with different designs to find the fastest setup. They’ll discover the power of air pressure and Newton’s Third Law as they test the impact of balloon shape, size, and string tension on speed and distance. The session will end with a Final Launch Challenge, where students can showcase their custom rocket designs.

Inquiry Driven Learning
Learners will make predictions about how different balloon shapes and sizes impact speed, test their hypotheses, and refine their designs based on real-world results. They’ll discuss why certain designs perform better, exploring the relationship between thrust, mass, and air resistance.

Take-Home Learning Extensions
Each student will take home a custom balloon rocket and launch track, complete with a challenge sheet to inspire ongoing experimentation. For a family-friendly extension, try building water bottle rockets for an epic backyard launch day, exploring the power of compressed air and water pressure!
